Curtains
Kitchen curtains
Kitchen curtains need easy-clean fabrics, compact shapes and resistance to damp and cooking smells.

What do we recommend for a kitchen?
Roman blinds are compact and stay clear of the worktop. Roller blinds are easy to clean, compact and modern. Short curtains are the classic option: they reach the sill and do not touch the worktop.
Which fabric should I choose for a kitchen?
When choosing a kitchen fabric: polyester is easy to clean and dries faster. A blend is a mix of cotton and polyester. A fabric with a water-repellent finish wipes clean of water and dirt more easily. Avoid pure cotton: it absorbs smells and grease. Light fabrics let more air through.
How do kitchen fabrics compare in 2026?
Four groups of fabric against the criteria that matter in a kitchen: resistance to damp, how easily grease cleans off, price and care.
Polyester (100%): the highest resistance to damp, and grease cleans off easily; in our catalogue these sheers cost from €9.50/m (Voile) to €16.50/m (Nobel), and most wash at 30 °C. Polyester with a water-repellent finish: wipes clean even more easily, but a hot wash damages the finish. A blend (cotton and polyester): medium resistance to damp, and grease is harder to clean off. Linen (pure): low resistance to damp, and grease cleans off with difficulty, so in a kitchen it wears out fastest.
The verdict: for a kitchen, choose a polyester fabric that washes at 30 °C; in an open-plan kitchen it should also go with the living room's fabrics. Avoid linen unless the kitchen is rarely used.
Which colours go with a kitchen?
The safest choice for a kitchen is neutral colours (white, sand, grey), which suit any style of interior, or bright accents such as yellow, green or blue, which freshen the space.
Match them to the kitchen cupboards or to the decorative details.
Measuring and fitting
We help you choose between a blind and a curtain for your kitchen. Measuring and fitting are offered across Lithuania. Measuring is free in Vilnius. In Kaunas and Klaipėda it is free on orders of €200 or more. Elsewhere in Lithuania the visit is paid, and the price is agreed beforehand. Book a measuring visit; the designer brings the fabric samples.
How safe are curtains next to a hob?
The kitchen is the one room in a home where fabric is constantly exposed to heat, damp and grease vapour. So before the colour, ask whether the fabric is safe in that place.
The safety rule: at least 60 cm between the fabric and the hob or the extractor hood. If the layout of the window does not allow it, use a roller blind or blinds fixed straight into the window recess.
Next to the hob: roman blinds or roller blinds fixed inside the frame; the fabric must not swing loose; clean every 3–4 weeks; avoid long, loose-hanging curtains.
By the sink: polyester-blend fabrics have the best resistance to damp; the bottom of the fabric at least 10–15 cm above the worktop; clean every 4–6 weeks; a roller blind inside the recess is the safest and most practical.
What are the five most common mistakes when choosing kitchen curtains?
1. Linen or pure cotton. Belgian linen looks lovely, but within six months it absorbs the smell of fried onion and it will not wash out. Fix: a linen-look polyester, which looks similar but washes at 30 °C and absorbs fewer smells.
2. Fabric closer than 60 cm to the hob. Vapour and grease damage the fabric, and with a gas hob there is a fire risk. The safety rule: at least 60 cm from the bottom edge of the fabric to the hob. If the distance is smaller, choose a PVC roller blind or an aluminium blind.
3. Washing in a machine at 60 °C. Customers try to remove grease with a hot wash: the heat damages the fabric's finish, and it loses its shape and colour sooner. Fix: wash at 30 °C on a gentle cycle, and wipe off marks with a damp cloth every 4–6 weeks.
4. A fabric so long that it touches the worktop. The fabric touches the work surface and absorbs damp and grease. The rule: the bottom edge of the fabric should be 10–15 cm above the worktop or the sill. Never let it touch the work surface.
5. Choosing curtains instead of a roman blind in an open-plan kitchen. In an open-plan kitchen that runs into the living room, long curtains look too large. A roman blind or a cassette roller blind takes up less room, is easier to clean and looks more modern. See our guide to roman blinds for kitchens.
How do kitchens differ in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda?
How the type of flat and the climate change the choice of kitchen curtains.
Vilnius: new-build flats often have open-plan kitchens, so roman blinds suit best and make one continuous view with the dining area. For the small kitchens of Soviet-era flats, cassette roller blinds are practical.
Kaunas: for the classic interiors of the flats in Žaliakalnis, easy-wash polyester curtains suit. In newer blocks, cassette roller blinds are more convenient. The average budget is €140–240.
Klaipėda: in coastal flats, because of salty air and higher damp, PVC roller blinds are more practical. In the centre of the port town a combination suits: a PVC roller blind for function and a light polyester curtain for looks.
How much do kitchen curtains cost in 2026?
How to work out the price for your window size (measuring is free in Vilnius).
An example: a 90 × 140 cm window takes a track of about 1.3 m, and wave pleats need 1.3 × 2.0 + 0.3 = 2.9 m of fabric. With Voile (€9.50/m): fabric €27.55, making at €8/m €23.20, tape and hanging at €5/m €14.50, about €65 in all. With Crepe (€15/m) the same window costs about €81. For a larger window the sum grows with the metres of fabric, and a lining (Blackout lining, €11/m) adds to the fabric and the making.
The track and its fitting are priced separately, from €9 per metre each. Measuring is free in Vilnius. In Kaunas and Klaipėda it is free on orders of €200 or more. Elsewhere in Lithuania the visit is paid, and the price is agreed beforehand.
Questions
How do I look after kitchen curtains?
Kitchen curtains next to the hob should be washed every 3–4 weeks, and those by the sink every 4–6 weeks. Polyester blends tolerate a machine wash up to 30–40 °C on a gentle cycle, while roman blinds with an impregnated finish need a hand wash or a delicate cycle. Grease on the fabric raises the risk of fire, so regular cleaning is a safety matter as well.
How do I match the curtain colour to a kitchen?
The colour should go with the tiles and the furniture. Terracotta, dark blue and red work as accent colours, but neutral colours (sand, grey, white) stay more practical in a kitchen. If you are unsure, choose neutral tones that go with any interior and do not need changing often.
Which curtains are best and safest for a kitchen?
The safest for a kitchen are roman blinds and café-style curtains: they are compact, easy to operate and do not add a fire hazard. Next to the hob keep at least 60 cm between the fabric and the source of heat, and choose a fabric that does not hold food smells. Roman blinds are the most versatile: they suit both the hob and the sink.
Which fabrics are best for kitchen curtains?
Polyester blends suit kitchen curtains best: they take up less grease, dry faster and keep their shape longer than natural fibres. Voile costs €9.50 per metre, Net sheer €12 per metre, and Crepe and Soft voile €15 per metre. Natural fabrics (linen, cotton) suit only a lightly used kitchen, since linen can shrink by up to 5% after washing.
Which curtains are best for a kitchen next to the hob?
Next to the hob we recommend roman blinds fixed inside the window frame: they do not hang loose and do not add a fire risk. The minimum safe distance from the fabric to the hob or the extractor hood is 60 cm. If the layout of the window does not allow it, the best alternative is a roller blind or faux wood blinds fixed inside the window recess.
How much do kitchen curtains cost?
A kitchen curtain is usually made in a sheer fabric: Voile €9.50 per metre, Net sheer €12, Crepe €15, Nobel €16.50. Making costs €8 per metre, hanging from €4 per metre of fabric, and a ceiling track from €9 per metre, with its fitting from €9 per metre. Roman blinds, roller blinds and blinds are priced on their own pages.
How much do lined curtains for a kitchen cost?
The price depends on the density of the fabric and how much light it holds back. Lined curtains are less common in a kitchen than in a bedroom; a voile-type sheer (€9.50 per metre) with a roller blind gives the most control over light and privacy. If the window faces the street, add a roller blind in a denser fabric for the evening (Nobel, €16.50 per metre).
What should hang at a kitchen window by the sink?
By the sink a polyester-blend roman blind or a roller blind fixed inside the window recess suits best: the fabric does not get wet from condensation and splashes from the worktop. The bottom of the fabric should be at least 10–15 cm above the worktop. Café-style curtains are also suitable: they cover only the lower part of the window and let the light in over the top.
