Fabrics by use: what to choose for each room

The easiest way to choose a fabric is to start from what it should do: let the light through by day, darken a bedroom, dim a living room in the evening, or give a room a natural texture. The light held back is given as the maker states it; prices are per metre.

  By day: see-through fabrics

  They let through 45–90% of the light and screen the view from the street by day. They suit a living room, a dining room and a bedroom as a first layer, and are usually made with wave pleats.

  For the bedroom: darkening fabrics

  They hold back 95–100% of the light, so the room is dark even on a summer morning. For a bedroom, a child's room and a home cinema; the track matters too, so that light does not get round the edges.
