Kitchen curtains: damp-resistant, easy to clean and safe by the hob

Kitchen curtains: damp-resistant, easy to clean and safe by the hob

Kitchen curtains have to stand up to damp, grease fumes and frequent cleaning, and still dress one of the busiest rooms in the home. The fabric, exact measurements and the track decide whether a curtain lasts and stays tidy. The designer helps choose everything from the fabric to the fitted track.

Kitchen curtains are decorative, but they also meet steam, heat and heavy use every day. Choosing them starts with the properties of the fabric and ends with exact fitting.

Why a kitchen needs different curtains

Kitchen curtains work in different conditions from any other room: grease fumes, damp and high temperatures quickly destroy an unsuitable fabric. Before choosing a colour or a pattern, check the practical points that decide how long a curtain lasts and how safe it is.

Practical requirements for kitchen curtains
RequirementWhat it means in practice
Easy careFabrics that wash in a machine (our washable fabrics go in at 30 °C on a gentle cycle). Shorter curtains (to the sill) do not reach the hob and do not collect dirt.
Resistance to heatNatural and blended fabrics (linen, cotton) do not melt, but they can burn, so keep curtains at least 60 cm from the hob and away from other sources of heat.
Tolerance of dampDenser weaves (150–250 g/m²) do not stretch or change shape after frequent washing.
The right lengthTo the sill, or 10–15 cm below it, suits a kitchen best. Floor-length curtains collect dirt and are a safety risk by the hob.
Natural fabricsLinen and cotton breathe, wash easily and last, and suit the microclimate of a kitchen.
Exact measuringCurtains measured inexactly are the commonest cause of problems. Professional measuring gets the fit right the first time.
FittingThe type of track must suit the construction and height of the window.
A consultation at homeChoosing a fabric from a screen does not work in a kitchen. A consultation with fabric samples lets you decide without guessing. Measuring is free in Vilnius. In Kaunas and Klaipėda it is free on orders of €200 or more. Elsewhere in Lithuania the visit is paid, and the price is agreed beforehand.

In a kitchen the cost of a mistake is double: an unsuitable fabric wears out quickly, and curtains fitted inexactly mean repeated expense. Getting both right at the start avoids that.

Which window dressings suit a kitchen best

Roller blinds in polyester or PVC-based fabrics (150–300 g/m²) are the easiest to look after: a wipe with a damp cloth is enough. That matters most by the hob, where grease collects fastest. Roller blinds give exact control of light from 0% to 100% and suit the sink and the hob best.

Café-style curtains cover only the lower part of the window, usually 40% to 60% of its height. That keeps natural light in the upper part and gives privacy at the same time. Light fabrics suit this type: linen (140–180 g/m²), cotton or blends of the two. Café-style curtains need an open pole no more than 35 mm in diameter.

Curtains with a wave heading can work in a kitchen, but they need a track with gliders made for them: they cannot hang on a standard pole. For a kitchen, choose light, tightly woven polyester or cotton-polyester blends (160–220 g/m²). The fabric should measure exactly 2× the width of the track.

Safety by the hob

If the window is directly above the hob, do not hang curtains at all: they are a fire risk. Keep at least 60 cm between the fabric and the hob. Beside the hob, use a roller blind or short café-style curtains that stop above the level of the hob.

How we can help

The commonest mistake in Lithuanian homes is choosing a fabric without thinking about the track. So the consultation takes place at your home, with fabric samples: the designer looks at the size of the window, the light in the kitchen and the colours of the existing finishes, then suggests specific options. Measuring the windows and fitting the tracks are part of the service. From order confirmation to installation, curtains, roman blinds and other blinds take 3–4 weeks, and tracks 1–2 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I care for curtains in a kitchen?

Wash kitchen curtains at least once every 1–2 months, more often than in other rooms. Choose light, washable fabrics that dry quickly and do not hold smells. Roman blinds are easy to care for: they can be vacuumed.

Which curtains are best and safest for a kitchen?

Polyester blends suit a kitchen best: they tolerate damp, smells and frequent washing better than delicate natural fibres. For safety, curtains must not hang close to the hob or other sources of heat. Curtains to the sill are the commonest and most practical length, because they do not cover the work areas.

Which is better for a kitchen: roman blinds or ordinary curtains?

Usually roman blinds: they draw up compactly and keep clear of the work area. They are easy to keep free of dust. Ordinary curtains are more decorative and easier to change, but they can hang too close to the hob or the sink and need more attention to safety.

Which curtains are best for a kitchen by the sink?

Damp-resistant, quick-drying fabrics such as polyester blends. Curtains to the sill, or roman blinds, are the most practical, because they do not reach the water and do not get splashed. See-through fabrics (organza, sheer) let in light and keep the window looking airy, but do not give full privacy.

What do kitchen curtains cost in Lithuania?

The price of kitchen curtains in Lithuania depends on the type and the material: standard roller blinds cost about €30–80, and made-to-order roman blinds €50–150 per window. Curtains made to measure can cost more. The final price depends on the quality and width of the fabric and on extra finishing details.

What do sheer curtains for a kitchen cost?

In Lithuania, from €30 for a standard window. Kitchen sheers are light, see-through or semi-transparent fabrics, and sheers in polyester blends cost less and are more practical than natural fibres. The final price depends on the size of the window, the type of fabric and the fixing chosen.

What do lined curtains cost?

Usually a little more than sheers: in Lithuania, from €50 per window. Lined curtains give more privacy and block more light. A sheer and a lined curtain together let you adjust light and privacy separately. Made-to-order roman blinds in a denser fabric can do the job of lined curtains, at €50–150.

What should hang at a kitchen window by the sink?

Short, damp-resistant curtains to the sill, or roman blinds. The fabric must not reach the water and must wash easily, which polyester blends do. Fix the track as high as possible, near the ceiling: the room then looks taller and more spacious.

Safety in a kitchen: the hob, the sink and choosing suitable fabrics

By the hob, safety is the most important criterion: curtains must hang far enough from the source of heat, and the fabric should be as hard to ignite as possible. By the sink choose damp-resistant, quick-drying polyester blends, which do not hold smells and wash easily. Roman blinds suit a kitchen well: they draw up compactly and stay clear of the hob and the sink.
