How curtain prices are calculated
- A curtain price is made up of the fabric, the making, the track or ceiling track, and the fitting.
- Fabric costs from €9.50 per metre for sheers and from €24 per metre for lined curtains. Making is €8 and €13 per metre. A ceiling track costs from €9 per metre, and fitting it from €9 per metre.
- Fabric needed = track length × 2.0 (wave heading) or × 1.5 (tape heading) + 0.30 m for the edges.
- When the drop is greater than the roll width (290–335 cm), the fabric is turned and joined from widths, so more of it is needed.
The amount of fabric, the making, the track and the fitting: what the final price is made of, and why curtains for tall windows cost more.
How is the fabric worked out when the drop fits the roll?
When the window's height is less than the roll width (for example, a 260 cm window and a fabric on a 295 cm roll), the fabric is cut straight across and the calculation is simple.
Formula
Fabric needed = track length × fullness + 0.30 m (for the edges and seams)
Fullness: wave heading 2.0×, tape heading 1.5×, roman blinds 1.0×
Example: lined curtains, a 5 m track, a drop of 2.6 m, Pera Blackout (€34/m, roll 295 cm)
- Fabric needed: 5.0 m × 2.0 + 0.30 m = 10.30 m
- Fabric price: 10.30 m × €34/m = €350.20
- Making: 10.30 m × €13/m = €133.90
- Tape: 10.30 m × €2/m = €20.60
- Hanging: 10.30 m × €4/m = €41.20
- Track: 5.0 m × €9/m = €45.00
- Fitting: 5.0 m × €9/m = €45.00
- In total: €635.90

What is turning the fabric, and why does it raise the price?
Curtain fabric comes on rolls, usually 290–335 cm wide. When the window's height is less than the roll width, the fabric is cut straight across and the calculation stays simple.
When the window is taller than the roll is wide, the fabric is turned through 90 degrees and made up from separate widths joined together. This is turning the fabric. Pera Blackout, for example, comes on a 295 cm roll: a curtain 290 cm high fits without turning, and one 310 cm high needs it.
Turning uses 30–80% more fabric, depending on the size of the window and the fabric, so curtains for rooms with high ceilings can cost a good deal more.
Fabric roll widths
| Roll width | Maximum drop without turning | Example fabrics |
|---|---|---|
| 290 cm | up to 290 cm | Gravity, Heat, Skandy, Raw, Terry |
| 295 cm | up to 295 cm | Abby, Bukle, Nord, Pera Blackout |
| 300 cm | up to 300 cm | Aura, Motion, Noir, Nova, Nordic Soft, Heritage |
| 320 cm | up to 320 cm | Chrome, Grace, Double-sided blackout, Net sheer, Nobel |
| 330 cm | up to 330 cm | Timber, Voile, Soft voile |
| 335 cm | up to 335 cm | Softy Blackout (the widest) |
Example with turning: a 5 m track, a drop of 3.1 m, Pera Blackout (roll 295 cm)
- Curtain drop 310 cm > roll width 295 cm = turning is needed
- Total width: 5.0 m × 2.0 + 0.30 m = 10.30 m
- Number of widths: ⌈10.30 / 2.95⌉ = 4 widths
- Length of a width: 3.10 m + 0.30 m = 3.40 m
- Total fabric: 4 × 3.40 m = 13.60 m
- Fabric price: 13.60 m × €34/m = €462.40
- (Without turning, the fabric would cost €350.20: a difference of +€112.20 or +32%)
- Making 10.30 m × €15/m = €154.50; tape €20.60; hanging 10.30 m × €5.50/m = €56.65; track €45.00; fitting 5.0 m × €10/m = €50.00
- In total with making and fitting: €789.15

Ways to keep the price down
- Measure precisely: a few centimetres can decide whether the fabric has to be turned.
- If your windows are tall (over 290 cm), choose fabrics on a wide roll (320–335 cm): Chrome, Grace Blackout or Softy Blackout.
- For lined curtains, choose a tape heading (1.5×) instead of a wave heading (2.0×): a heavier fabric falls well at the lower fullness, and a quarter less fabric is needed.
- At the consultation the fabric and the heading are chosen so that the fabric need not be turned, where that can be avoided.
- If you are choosing between two fabrics, ask the designer to bring samples of both to the home consultation, and compare them at your own window.

Questions
What is the price of curtains made of?
Four parts: the fabric (from €9.50 per metre), the making (€8 per metre for sheers, €13 per metre for lined curtains), a track or ceiling track (from €9 per metre) and the fitting (from €9 per metre). An average project for one window costs €150–400.
What is turning the fabric, and why does it raise the price?
When the window is taller than the fabric roll is wide (usually 290–335 cm), the fabric is turned through 90° and joined from widths. That uses 30–80% more fabric.
How much do curtains cost for a standard window?
€250–400 for lined curtains on a standard window (about 200 × 260 cm), with the fabric, making, track and fitting, depending on the fabric chosen.
How can I reduce the price of curtains for tall windows?
Choose fabrics on a wider roll (320–335 cm): Chrome, Grace Blackout or Softy Blackout. That avoids turning the fabric and saves 30–80% of the fabric cost.
