Roller blinds for children's rooms: which to choose, the cost and EN 13120 safety

For a child's room, choose a blackout roller blind with no loose cord: a cordless (spring-loaded) blind, a blind with a chain held by a safety tension device, or a motorised blind with a Somfy motor. For small children, cordless or motorised blinds are the safest. Prices start at €45 for a plain day blind, €90 for blackout, €65 for a cassette day blind and €200 for a motorised one. This guide sets out the four main options, the safety requirements, how blackout, day and night and day blinds compare for sleep, a 2026 price list by window size, five common mistakes and the questions parents ask most.
Which roller blinds should you choose for a child's room? Four options
Four types of blind suit a child's room. The choice depends on the child's age, which way the window faces (east, west or south), what the room is used for (sleeping and play) and the budget. All four are made to the exact size of the window. From order confirmation to installation takes 3–4 weeks.
- 1Blackout roller blinds block 95–100% of the light, which suits daytime sleep and light summer nights. The fabric has a dense acrylic coating and is usually paired with a cassette, so that light does not creep in at the sides. From €90; the first choice for children aged 0–5.
- 2Cordless (spring-loaded) roller blinds are worked with a push or a gentle pull. They have no chain, no hanging cord and no loose control within reach. For small children they are the safest kind. From €75.
- 3Faux wood blinds resist damp, are easy to wipe clean and look natural. They suit older children (6 and over) who open and close the blind themselves, and can be combined with blackout curtains on a separate pole. From €85.
- 4Motorised roller blinds with a Somfy motor are worked by remote, phone or voice through Alexa and Google Home. With no chain at all, they are the safest option, and they can be programmed to rise in the morning and lower in the evening. From €200 for the blind with its motor, plus €60–90 for the remote and programming.
EN 13120: the safety standard for children's rooms
The European standard EN 13120 sets out the safety requirements for internal window blinds, and its main concern is loose cords and chains, which carry a risk of strangulation in a small child's room. For a child's room we therefore offer three safeguards: no cord at all, a tension device fixed to the wall, or a motor. At the measuring visit, say how old the children using the room are, so that the matching set-up is chosen. Keep the remote and wall switch of a motorised blind out of the child's reach, and the power cable fixed and hidden.
Blackout, day and night or day blind: which is best for sleep?
The younger the child, the more light has to be blocked. Babies (0–12 months) sleep during the day, so blackout is essential. For schoolchildren (6 and over), a day and night blind can be enough if the window does not face east. The table compares the main types by how much light they block, how well they suit sleep, the price and the age they suit.
| Type | Light blocked | Suitability for sleep | Price from | Age it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blackout | 95–100% | Excellent: full darkness | €90 | Ages 0–5, babies in particular |
| Day and night | 60–85% (depends on the stripes) | Good: adjustable, but does not give full darkness | €55 | Ages 6 and over, if the window does not face east |
| Day (light filtering) | 20–40% | Moderate: for the play area only | €45 | A play corner, not a sleeping area |
| Cassette blackout | 100% (no side gaps) | Highest: darkness from every side | €115 | Ages 0–3 on the south side |
A practical tip
If the room faces east or south, choose a cassette blackout blind. A plain blackout blind still lets 5–10% of the light in at the sides, and the 5 a.m. sun of a summer morning wakes the child through the window. For that reason a cassette blackout blind is the first thing we suggest for east- and south-facing children's rooms.
What do roller blinds for a child's room cost?
The prices below are for 2026, for the three most common sizes of children's room window. They include the fabric and the mechanism. Fitting costs an extra €15–25 per window, depending on how complicated it is. Measuring is free in Vilnius. In Kaunas and Klaipėda it is free on orders of €200 or more. Elsewhere in Lithuania the visit is paid, and the price is agreed beforehand.
| Type of blind | 60 × 120 cm | 80 × 140 cm | 100 × 160 cm | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day, standard | €45 | €58 | €78 | For the play area, not for sleeping |
| Blackout, standard | €90 | €115 | €148 | A sound all-round choice |
| Blackout, cassette | €115 | €148 | €189 | Full darkness, no side gaps |
| Day and night | €65 | €84 | €108 | Adjustable; ages 6 and over |
| Cordless | €75 | €95 | €125 | Safest for small children |
| Motorised, Somfy | €200 | €240 | €295 | Remote €60 extra, programming €20 extra |
A worked example for an average order: an 80 × 140 cm cassette blackout blind (€148) plus fitting (€20) comes to €168 fitted; order a safety tension device with it. A motorised Somfy blind in the same window would cost €240, plus a €60 remote, €20 programming and €25 fitting: €345.
Would you like an exact price for your child's room?
At a measuring visit the designer measures the windows, notes which way they face and suggests a blind, with an exact price.
Arrange a measuring visitFive mistakes to avoid when buying roller blinds for a child's room
- 1Choosing a day blind for the sleeping area. Parents often think a lightly darkening fabric will do, and then the child wakes at 5 a.m. in summer. Use blackout for children aged 0–5, always.
- 2Ignoring the cord risk. A blind with a long chain is bought in the hope of hiding the chain behind a wardrobe, and the child finds it. Use a cordless or motorised blind for small children.
- 3Overlooking the side gaps. A plain blackout blind fitted on the window frame lets light in through a gap of 1–2 cm at the sides. Use a cassette blackout blind, or blackout curtains on a separate pole.
- 4A cheap fabric. A €25 blind from a hypermarket fades or warps within a year, or the mechanism jams. Choose a good fabric and a good mechanism; mechanisms carry our 24-month warranty. Such a blind usually lasts 8–10 years.
- 5Forgetting the control height. The blind is fitted so that the control is within a child's reach, and a four-year-old keeps pulling it. Use a motorised blind with a remote, or fit the mechanism high, where only adults can reach it.
Cords and chains
Loose cords and chains carry a real risk of strangulation. If your child is under four, never leave them alone in a room with a blind that has loose hanging cords or chains.
Choosing by type of building
The type of building matters too. In new-build flats with large, sometimes panoramic windows, cassette blackout blinds usually suit: such windows call for exact measuring and reliable darkening. In older flats the windows are more often a standard size (for example 80 × 140 cm), so cordless blackout blinds work well. On the coast, where the air is damper, we recommend faux wood or composite blackout fabrics that resist mould. Our warranty covers mechanisms for 24 months.

Arrange a design consultationFrequently asked questions
Which roller blinds are best for a child's room?
Cassette blackout blinds with no loose cord, or motorised blinds with a Somfy motor. Blackout supports good sleep, the cassette closes the side gaps, and cordless or motorised control removes hanging cords. A fitted blind costs from €110 (standard blackout) to €345 (motorised Somfy) for a medium-sized window.
Is it safe for children to have blinds with chains and cords?
Only when the chain is fixed with a safety tension device to the wall or the window frame, out of the child's reach. For small children, cordless or motorised blinds are the safest. Order a safety tension device with any blind for a child's room.
Is blackout or day and night better for a baby?
For a baby (0–12 months), blackout without question. Babies sleep several times a day, and their sleep cycles are sensitive to light. A day and night blind blocks only 60–85% of the light, which is not enough for good daytime sleep. A cassette blackout blind (from €115 for a standard window) is the choice we suggest for the first three years.
How much do roller blinds for a child's room cost?
A standard blackout blind for a medium-sized window (80 × 140 cm) costs €115, plus €20 for fitting: €135. A cassette blackout blind in the same window is €148 plus €20: €168. A cordless blind is €95 plus €20: €115. A motorised Somfy blind with a remote and programming comes to about €345.
Do I need curtains as well as a blackout blind?
Not with a cassette blackout blind, which blocks the light by itself. With a plain blackout blind (no cassette), we recommend a sheer curtain to mask the light that comes in at the sides, especially if the window faces south or east. Many parents choose the two layers for the look.
What size of blind should I choose for the window?
For a child's room we recommend fitting the blind on the frame or the ceiling rather than on the window sash, so that the fabric overlaps the opening by 5–7 cm on each side and no light comes in at the edges. For an 80 × 140 cm window, the blind should be 90 × 150 cm. The exact size is worked out at the measuring visit, from the construction of your window.
How do I clean a blackout blind in a child's room?
Clean blackout fabric dry, with a damp microfibre cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a soft attachment. Do not use water and soap, because damp can damage the acrylic coating. For stains (pencil, food) use a little lukewarm water with a neutral soap and a soft sponge, without scrubbing. We recommend professional dry cleaning every 2–3 years.
How long does a roller blind last in a child's room?
A good blind lasts 8–10 years if the mechanism is used properly. Our warranty covers the mechanism for 24 months. A blind lasts longest when it is worked smoothly and without force. The commonest cause of failure is pulling too hard or forcing a jammed mechanism.
Is a motorised roller blind suitable for a baby?
Yes. A motorised blind with a Somfy motor suits babies and small children well: there are no chains or cords, it is worked by remote or phone, and it can be programmed to rise and lower automatically. Keep the remote out of the child's reach. The one drawback is the price (€200–300 per window), so many parents choose it only for the baby's bedroom and fit a plain cordless blind in the playroom.
Can I combine a roller blind with a curtain in a child's room?
Yes. The blackout blind gives the darkness for sleep, and a coloured sheer curtain on a separate pole adds softness and ties in with the room's interior. For a medium-sized window the blind and curtain together cost about €220–280 with fitting.
