About 50 mm wooden blinds

50 mm wooden blinds are often chosen for large windows and modern interiors. The wide slats look solid and control the light well. Electric operation (Somfy and Brel motors) is available for the 50 and 65 mm blinds.

They are made 270–3630 mm wide and 400–4000 mm high, the largest sizes in the whole wooden blind range. The maximum area with the maker's warranty is up to 5.5 m² (abachi/brushed), and with electric operation, without the maker's warranty, up to 11.0 m².

There is a choice of five materials: basswood, bamboo, abachi, brushed wood and PVC. Only PVC cannot be electrically operated.

Which materials can I choose?

The five materials are the same as for the 35 mm blinds, but with larger maximum sizes. Basswood and bamboo: up to 5.0 m² with the maker's warranty, up to 9.15 m² with an electric motor (without the maker's warranty). Abachi and brushed wood: up to 5.5 m² with the maker's warranty, up to 11.0 m² with an electric motor. PVC: up to 3.0 m² with the maker's warranty, manual operation only.

How are they operated?

Four manual configurations: controls on the left, controls on the right, tilt on the left + lift on the right, tilt on the right + lift on the left. With electric operation the blind is made without control cords and is operated by remote control or through a smart-home system.

Electric operation

Electric operation with Somfy or Brel motors. Somfy motors work with TaHoma, Connexoon and other smart-home platforms. Brel motors are a more economical alternative with an RF remote control. With electric operation the blind is made without cords, so there is nothing hanging within a child's reach.

How are they fitted, and with which brackets?

Fitting methods: a universal (face/top fix) bracket (with no projection, or a 12 mm or 19 mm projection; silver, white or black); a ceiling (top fix) bracket. Side fixing with a cable: free-hanging, flat or L-shaped. Bottom fixing: clear plastic, to the window frame.

Decorative tapes

The full range of decorative tapes: standard, 10 series and 38 series, more than 75 colours. Decorative tapes add about 5% to the stack height of the blind.

How high is the stack of a raised blind?

The stack of a raised blind depends on the height of the blind. Allow for it when the blind is fixed to the wall above the window, so that once raised it does not cover the glass.

Important information about child safety

In some circumstances, infants and small children can become entangled in the control cords of window dressings, which creates a serious risk of strangulation. We recommend fixing the controls out of children's reach (no lower than 1500 mm from the floor) and using the cord safety device supplied with the blind. Check regularly that the cords are properly secured and do not form loops.

Which rooms suit 50 mm blinds?

  • Large living rooms
  • Panoramic windows
  • Offices
  • Cafés and restaurants
  • Bedroom with automation

Questions

Do 50 mm blinds suit panoramic windows?

Yes. 50 mm blinds are the usual choice for large and panoramic windows. The maximum width is 3630 mm and the maximum height 4000 mm, and the area with the maker's warranty is up to 5.5 m². With an electric motor an area up to 11.0 m² can be covered.

How does electric operation work?

Electric operation uses Somfy or Brel motors built into the blind's mechanism. It is operated by an RF remote control or through a smart-home system (Somfy TaHoma). The blind is made without cords, which is the safest arrangement where there are children. In the calculator the electric motor adds about €40 to the price of the blind; the final sum is confirmed in the quote.

What do 50 mm slats offer over 35 mm?

50 mm slats cover a larger area (up to 5.5 m² against 4.4 m²), are made to a greater width (up to 3630 mm against 3000 mm) and offer electric operation. Wide slats look more modern and more solid. 35 mm suits smaller windows and a classic style.

What is the stack height of the raised blind?

The stack height depends on the height of the blind. For example, a blind 1800 mm high (basswood/abachi/PVC) gives a stack of 259 mm, and a bamboo one 223 mm. For blinds with decorative tapes add about 5%. Exact figures are worked out when the order is placed.

Are PVC blinds suitable for a bathroom?

Yes. PVC blinds are fully resistant to damp, and suit bathrooms, kitchens and pool areas. But PVC cannot be electrically operated, and the maximum area is limited to 3.0 m² (with the maker's warranty).
